Before the Day: A Simple Ceremony Planning Guide
September 2025 · by Nicole Webster
Planning a wedding ceremony can feel like a lot. The truth is, once you understand the rhythm of it, the process is calm, considered and quietly joyful. Here are the five steps I walk every couple through.
Step 1 — Give Notice
Lodge your Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) at least one month and one day before your wedding date. This is a legal requirement in Australia, and your celebrant handles the paperwork on your behalf. The earlier you lodge, the more flexibility you have if any documents need translation or amendment.
Step 2 — Choose Your Celebrant
Meet with a few celebrants before you commit. You're looking for someone whose personality and style match your vision — warm, calm, professional, and a presence you trust at the front of the room. The right celebrant makes you feel at ease from the very first conversation.
Step 3 — Plan Your Ceremony
Work with your celebrant to craft the ceremony script. Decide on readings, rituals, music for the processional and recessional, and whether you'd like to write your own vows. This is where your story becomes a ceremony — every word chosen deliberately, every moment placed with intention.
Step 4 — Prepare Your Documents
Organise birth certificates, photo ID, and any required translations for documents not in English. If either of you has been previously married, you'll need divorce or death certificates. Your celebrant will give you an exact checklist and review everything well before the day.
Step 5 — Rehearse and Relax
A brief rehearsal — even a quick walk-through the morning of — helps everyone know where to stand and when to speak. Then relax. Your celebrant has everything under control. All that's left is for you to be present, look at each other, and enjoy it.
